  8. Atari Computers of Sunnyvale CA is pleased to announce the release of
  9. version 3.01 of its Hard Disk Utilities package.  This new version will
  10. supercede all previous versions of this software package and will be
  11. packaged in all Megafile units made from this point on.
  12.  
  13. This program may be copied and distributed freely as long as this ARC
  14. file is intact and the programs contained within are not changed or
  15. modified in any way.  Atari Computers retains the right to modify and or
  16. change this program without notice.  This program and its related files
  17. have not been released to the public domain.

  19.                                 WARNING:
  20.  
  21. Because some units delivered between May 7th and July 1st may contain
  22. HDX v3.00 (diskette part number CA400307-002), it is important that any
  23. hard drive that has had HINSTALL run from v3.00 be installed with
  24. version 3.01 (diskette part number CA400307-003) at once.  Version 3.00
  25. of the HDX utilities contains a serious 'bug' that could leave data
  26. written to the hard drive in a scrambled and unusable condition.  Data
  27. read in from the hard drive is not affected.  Please follow the
  28. directions outlined below for installing a new autoboot driver on your
  29. hard drive to cure this problem.

  31. Note:  Both 3.00 and 3.01 remove the previous size limit of 16 megabytes
  32. per partition, however, using partition sizes larger than 16 megabytes
  33. may cause some 'disk doctors,' hard drive 'de-fragmenting' programs, or
  34. image backup programs to operate improperly.  Please consult the companies
  35. marketing these programs and test them with sample data that will not
  36. matter if lost or scrambled.

  38. The HDX301.ARC file should contain:

  40.       AUTO.ARC          <---- Contains files needed for AUTO folder
  41.       HDX.ARC           <---- Contains files needed for HDX folder
  42.       HINSTALL.ARC      <---- Contains files needed for HINSTALL folder
  43.       README.1ST        <---- This file you are reading

  46. The AUTO.ARC file should contain:
  47.  
  48.       AHDI.PRG          <---- Floppy hard drive boot program
  49.       FOLDR100.PRG      <---- Increases system folder limit
  50.  
  51.  
  52. The HDX.ARC file should contain:

  54.       HDX.PRG           <---- hard drive utility program
  55.                               (format, partition etc)
  56.       HDX.RSC           <---- Resource file for HDX.PRG
  57.       SHIP.PRG          <---- Parks hard drive for moving
  58.       WINCAP            <---- Data file for HDX.PRG

  61. The HINSTALL.ARC file should contain:
  62.  
  63.       COLDBOOT.PRG      <---- Restarts your ST
  64.       HINSTALL.PRG      <---- Installs your hard drive as autobooting
  65.                               device
  66.       HINSTALL.RSC      <---- Resource file for HINSTALL.PRG
  67.       SHDRIVER.RAW      <---- Date file for HINSTALL.PRG

  70. Please unARC the files into the appropriate folders on a blank floppy
  71. disk in drive A:
  72.  
  73. The HDX, HINSTALL, and AHDI programs are the same as found in your
  74. original hard drive boot disk with the following exceptions:
  75.  
  76.  
  77. o     More than four (4) partitions per hard drive are now supported.  No
  78.       upper limit to partitions.
  79. o     Partitions can now be larger than 16 megabytes.  Maximum size is
  80.       now either drive capacity or one (1) gigabyte, whichever is smaller.
  81. o     Removable media is now supported (i.e.: Megafile 44).
  82. o     The markbad option in HDX is now more effective in detecting bad
  83.       sectors on media.

  85. To install your existing Atari Hard Drive with HDX v3.01 (autobooting):
  86.  
  87. o     Re-boot your system with HDX 3.01 in drive A:
  88. o     Double-click on the floppy icon for drive A:
  89. o     Next, double-click on the folder icon labeled HINSTALL.  Locate and
  90.       execute the HINSTALL.PRG file within that folder.
  91. o     Install the autoboot file on your hard drive following the
  92.       directions in your Megafile manual.
  93. o     Last, exit HINSTALL and execute the COLDBOOT.PRG file found within
  94.       the same folder.
  95. o     The computer will now re-boot with HDX 3.01 installed.
  96. o     DO NOT place the AHDI.PRG file inside the AUTO folder of your
  97.       autobooting hard drive (drive C:).

  99. To install your existing Atari Hard Drive with HDX v3.01 (floppy boot):
  100.  
  101. o     Re-boot your system with HDX 3.01 in drive A:
  102. o     Double-click on the floppy icon for drive A:
  103. o     Next, double-click on the folder icon labeled HINSTALL.  Locate and
  104.       execute the HINSTALL.PRG file within that folder.
  105. o     Remove the autoboot file on your hard drive following the
  106.       directions in your Megafile manual.
  107. o     Last, exit HINSTALL and execute the COLDBOOT.PRG file found within
  108.       the same folder.
  109. o     The computer will now re-boot with HDX 3.01 installed.
  110. o     Make sure a copy of the new AHDI.PRG is in the AUTO folder of
  111.       whatever disk is in drive A: at powe-up or re-boot time.  DO NOT
  112.       place the AHDI.PRG file inside the AUTO folder of your hard drive
  113.       (drive C:).
